The UN has declared 2019 to be the start of the Decade of Family Farming, a recognition of the importance of the world’s 570 million family farmers in food production and environmental sustainability. But many are the victims of poverty and hunger. The UN hopes to use this profile to draw attention to governments’ need to improve agricultural policies so that more family farmers – many of who are women – can flourish and think sustainably. As an agricultural journalist, he is the past president of the International Federation of Agricultural Journalists and a lifetime achievement award recipient from the Canadian Farm Writers' Federation. His programs and research papers have been recognized nationally and internationally through awards from the Journal of Applied Communications, the National Agri-Marketing Association, the Association for Communications Excellence, and others.
