There’s a new dairy feeding program that aims to significantly increase production efficiency, thanks in part, to a very smart sensor-based ear tag. Alltech has been testing its Smart Dairy program, which combines data from the ear tag with nutrigenomics. Early on-farm results show it could increase efficiency by up to 20 per cent. The ear tags collect data on feeding and animal activity and the program includes predictive alerts on rumination levels, mastitis and ketosis. Health information from an ear tag? Hard to fathom, but there it is – in black and white.
