Food fraud is a global problem highlighted by misrepresentation of fish and other seafood species. Improper labelling can cause issues ranging from risks to human health, to illegal and unsustainable harvest of wild fish stocks. The United Nations Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) issued a report calling for science-based traceability systems and improved methods of species identification. The University of Guelph’s Biodiversity Institute of Ontario has already made great strides in this area, leading to technology spinoff by a Guelph company called TRU-ID.
