Food market instability can sometimes drive farmers to extreme behaviour…and creativity. Take the Bahamas, for example, where (according to local lore), an entrepreneurial farmer developed a pig herd on an uninhabited island, thinking his input costs would be very, very low. But when he or she found out how much work was required to maintain them, they were abandoned. Not all was lost for those animals, however: locals took pity on them, and turned the situation into an ‘ocean safari’ tourist attraction, feeding and swimming with pigs in the ocean.
