Food illiteracy is contributing massively to Ontarian’s misinformed food choices, limited cooking skills, and importantly, obesity. And alarmingly, the results of The Ontario Federation of Agriculture’s recent survey shows that most Ontarians have ‘old-fashioned’ ideas about farming, despite living in an otherwise progressive province. Specifically, the federation found common misconceptions about Ontario agriculture practices related to the treatment of animals, pesticides, hormones, antibiotic use, agriculture’s environmental footprint and the size and farm ownership. With better food literacy, people will understand the advancements that have been made in agriculture, including food safety, nutrition and information.
