China’s candidate for leader of the U.N.’s Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) was elected in a landslide vote recently. That was surprising, given the way China has been treating its trading partners lately – think canola and meat exports from Canada. Seems countries may have been unwilling to challenge the superpower.
In his victory speech, Dr. Qu Dongyu promised to uphold the objectives of the FAO, which include fairness, justice and transparency. If it wants to save face, China may find itself forced to act more in the spirit of those and less arbitrarily. Read more …
