Dr. George Atkins passed away last month at the age of 92, and leaves an incredible legacy with Farm Radio International (formerly the Developing Countries Farm Radio Network). The network helps social- and agronomic farm radio scripts be shared among hundreds of broadcasters in Africa, and ultimately, millions of farmers and rural people there.
George always encouraged me to keep up the University of Guelph’s agricultural communications efforts, and he loved to visit the communications students whenever he could. Below is a photo from the summer of 1995 shot by Martin Schwalbe at CFRU Radio, of George offering script reading and writing tips to SPARK students (from left) Marianne Clark, Jenny Dobbin and Carol (Pilley) Carson.
I write about George’s legacy in this week’s Urban Cowboy in the Guelph Mercury.
